Folk Songs Old & New

Dougie MacKenzie & Brian Miller | Choras

Rescheduled from 2022, The Little Theatre is proud to welcome Dougie Mackenzie, Brian Miller, and the wonderful Choras, for an evening of Folk Songs - Old & New.

Dougie Mackenzie

Described as "one of Scotland's finest singers of traditional song", Dougie's voice has a warm quality and demonstrates a great understanding in the interpretation of songs. Dougie Mackenzie sang mostly Gaelic songs in his youth, but was introduced to folk song at the famed Inverness Folk Club run by Duncan MacLennan, who mentored Dougie and gave him numerous songs. Dougie is drawn to the Scots ballad language and the stories it carries to us from the past. Dougie is well-known from appearances at many Scottish and English festivals over the years and has won many traditional singing competitions including Keith, Falkland, Kirriemuir and Aberdeen. He recently released an album with Brian Miller entitled Along the Way

Brian Miller

A well respected figure on the Scottish traditional music scene, Brian has been playing music since he was a young boy and his instrument of choice was the guitar. In the early 70s, while at Glasgow University, he joined the 'Laggan', played professionally with 'Swan Arcade' and even before that used to play regularly with the great Fife Road Show. After that he returned to Edinburgh and played with fiddler Charlie Sloane. He has also been known to appear with those legends of good taste and anarchy, 'The Vindscreen Vipers'. He became a member of the dance band 'The Occasionals', and has always been in great demand as a session musician. In recent years Brian has started to present 'Diamond Folk', an excellent folk radio program, which airs on Sunday evenings on Midlothian's Black Diamond FM

Choras

Harmony singing trio Choras is Aileen Carr, Janice Reavell and Barbara Dymock. Each is a much loved and respected traditional singer in her own right with many and varied musical collaborations behind her and a vast experience of performing. Whilst car-sharing on a trip to Yorkshire Traditional Song Weekend, pre-Covid, they enjoyed the sing-a-long journey so much, they decided to get together to rehearse. Plans were then thwarted by pandemic restrictions but, nothing daunted, they have Zoomed, FaceTimed and shared recorded material and now specialise in a cappella harmony arrangements of an eclectic mix of songs traditional and modern-ish.
